After the June 4th crackdown, many marches and protests took place across China. According to the book "The Tiananmen Papers", more than 30,000 students set up barricades on roads in Shanghai on June 5th, causing blockages at 122 intersections, disrupting transport within the city and obstructing train operations.
In the early hours of morning on the 6th, the Shanghai City Government removed the barricades by force; however, nearly 10,000 students and citizens put the barricades up again. At 8:45pm on June 6th within Shanghai city limits, train No. 161 from Beijing to Shanghai entered the Guangxin Road railway intersection, where it was blocked. The train hit nine people who were watching the train; five of the people died on the spot. "People’s Daily" newspaper reported that six people were injured and six people died; "Wen Wei Po" stated that eight people died there and more than 30 others were injured.
By 10:00pm, more than 30,000 people had gathered at the scene, disrupting rail traffic. The Shanghai City Government urgently dispatched 700 public security police officers to maintain order at the scene; the police clashed with the crowd. Some members of the public, who were angry with the train hitting people, assaulted the driver and even set fire to the train cars. Eventually, eight train cars were burned and 11 people were arrested by the Shanghai public security police.
According to the "1989 Civil Report on the Status of the June 4th Crackdown Victims", on June 15th, the Intermediate People’s Court of Shanghai handed down a first-instance verdict sentencing Xu Guoming, Bian Hanwu, and Yan Xuerong to death as "criminals who set fire to trains and willfully destroyed transportation and traffic facilities during the serious disturbance at the Guangxin Road intersection with the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway on June 6th". They were deprived of their political rights for life and scheduled for imminent execution.
