According to Ding Zilin's account, at about 11:00pm on June 3rd, her son Jiang Jielian, climbed out a window and left their home to go to Tian'anmen Square via Muxidi. He was killed behind the long flowerbed in front of Building No. 29 on Fuxingmenwai Avenue. Jiang Jielian was shot in the left side of his back; the bullet went through his chest and pierced his heart. At the time, he was a high school student, only 17 years old.
The death of Jiang Jielian is important evidence that the People's Liberation Army fired live ammunition during the crackdown and caused innocent casualties. After the incident, Ding Zilin was so distraught that she joined forces with other families of the victims to form the Tian'anmen Mothers. For years, the group has persisted in demanding that the government reveal the truth, give justice to the victims, and hold those responsible accountable. The Tian'anmen Mothers have remained under surveillance or been restricted in their action by the authorities for a long time. Currently, sixty-two family members of the victims have passed away; there has still been no justice for their loved ones.
