On May 28th, actress Anita Mui (Mui Yim-fong) joined the million-protester march in Hong Kong in support of democracy. Hong Kong magazine "The Gold TV Weekly" reported that she was so enthusiastic that she walked for several hours without eating. She was physically exhausted, but she still went to Xinhua News Agency the day after the march to cheer up the sit-in protesters. Then, she participated in the recording of the democracy movement song "For Freedom". As a result, she slept less than 20 hours that week.

Also in May, "Ming Pao Weekly" reported that Anita Mui had participated in a concert tour in the US and Canada to raise funds for the 1989 democracy movement. Even though she flew to many cities and went without sleep for 48 hours, she didn't look tired on stage. The report stated, "Everyone in Hong Kong has seen how she exhausts her pure heart for the democracy movement." On stage, Anita Mui said, "I brought no siren costume, bad girl costume, nor any fancy clothes. I came only with a sincere heartK Some have asked if, being so enthusiastic about working for democracy, I feel afraid? I said I'm notK The only pity is that I can't sing before my compatriots in the mainland now." At that time, the Hong Kong media praised her for her boldness and bravery, for being a true heroine.
