On May 27, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China held the Concert for Democracy in China benefit performance in Happy Valley, Hong Kong. More than 300 celebrities from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and China participated in the concert to support the students in Beijing, attracting 300,000 people to the event. By the end, a total of HK$13 million was raised, all of which were used to support the 1989 democracy movement.

The Concert for Democracy in China was planned in less than a week; but at the calling of Anita Mui (Mui Yim-Fong), the "Big Sister of the Entertainment World", 100 entertainers completed recording the song "For Freedom" in a very short time. On the 27th, the day of the performance, the stage was draped with a white banner whose red lettering said "The Entire Hong Kong Entertainment Community Supports the Beijing Student Movement". The event was hosted by James Wong (Wong Jum-sum); Philip Chan (Chan Yan-kin); Eric Tsang (Tsang Chi-wai); John Sham (Sham Kin-fun); and others. Later on, John Sham, a Hong Kong film director and one of the planners of the "Concert for Democracy in China", recalled: "From 10:00 in the morning to 10:00 in the evening, two Hong Kong TV stations and Radio Television Hong Kong broadcast it live. There were hundreds of thousands of people, artists, singers, and people in Hong Kong that were present at the concert. I remember Teresa Teng (Teng Li-chun) called me and said she had heard that we were having such an event, and asked if she could come. So we didn't have to go look for [stars]; they came looking for us."

That day, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China announced that it would launch a one-million-person march on the 28th to once again show solidarity with the student movement in Beijing.
