At 10:00am on May 20, more than 200 Chinese students in Ottawa and more than 250 Chinese students from Montreal gathered in front of the PRC Embassy in Ottawa. They held banners and signs, and chanted "Oppose martial law", "Oppose Autocracy, Demand Democracy", "Resolutely support the domestic student democracy movement" and other slogans, to protest the Chinese government's decision to implement martial law. Some students also gave speeches in front of the embassy, demanding that the Chinese government cancel the charges against the students, and to have a sincere dialog with the students. They also demanded that corrupt officials be severely punished, and that the government ensure freedom of the press and the formation of civil associations. The student representatives submitted an open letter for the Chinese government and the National People's Congress to the Chinese embassy, and then they walked to Canada's Parliament Hill and continued the demonstration.
This was the largest protest by Chinese students in Ottawa in more than a month, and reporters from local TV stations, radio stations, newspapers, and news agencies were present to do interviews and report on the situation.
