On May 19, Cui Jian and his band visited the hunger-striking students in Tian'anmen Square. There, they sang songs such as "Starting Over Again", "Rocking and Rolling on the New Long March", "Like a Knife" and "A Piece of Red Cloth". The hunger-striking students were encouraged.

After the June 4th crackdown, Cui Jian was officially banned from performing for many years. Later, in an interview with the media, he said that his songs had nothing to do with politics, but emphasized: "Music cannot have a political purpose, but it cannot evade political responsibility."
