On May 4, 1989, higher education students in Shanghai held a march to commemorate the May Fourth Movement. Students went to the municipal government for a sit-in and erected a replica Statue of Liberty. At the end of May, the "Goddess of Democracy" statue was also erected in Tian'anmen Square in Beijing. The Goddess of Democracy was created over a span of four days by students from eight higher education institutions, including the Sculpture Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts; Beijing Film Academy; Central Academy of Drama; Central Conservatory of Music; China Conservatory of Music; Chinese Central Academy of Arts and Crafts; and the Beijing Dance Academy. Based partly on the Statue of Liberty, the Goddess of Democracy stood in the Square, facing the portrait of Mao Zedong hanging on the Tian'anmen Gate Tower.
