In April 1989, the Hungarian government ordered the shutdown of electricity to the steel fence along the Hungarian-Austrian border. On May 2, 1989, the cabinet of Németh Miklós announced the demolition of its fence on the Austrian border, citing financial considerations. This move allowed East Germans who wanted to flee to West Germany to first go to Hungary; once beyond the borders of Hungary, they were in the capitalist world. This caused the "Pan-European Picnic" in August; it had far-reaching consequences on the later fall of the Berlin Wall, as well as the end of the Cold War.
