At 6:00pm on April 20, thousands of students from Nanjing University walked out of the school gate. Along the way, they joined with students from Nanjing Normal University and Hohai University and went to the provincial government together. According to a report submitted by the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee to the Central Committee, slogans such as "To Bleed Is Nothing, To Be Free Is Most Precious", "Respond To Peking U's Seven Recommendations, Attack Institutions in Power", and "Ring In May Fourth With A Fight" appeared in Nanjing University that day. The local protest situation was gradually heating up.
After the student march arrived at the gate of the provincial government building, the leader asked loudly, "Are we going to fight the dictatorship?" The students answered: "Yes!" The leader asked: "Are we going to fight the bureaucrats?" The students answered: "Yes!" The leader asked: "Is Yaobang good?" The students answered: "Yes!" At about 9 o'clock, the students read out the "Nanjing Academic 4/20 Manifesto", demanding:
- Reveal the inside story of Hu Yaobang's resignation.
- Oppose corruption and publish the detailed accounts of Kanghua Inc. (formed by Deng Pufang, son of Deng Xiaoping).
- Regularly publish economic indicators related to the people's lives.
- Announce the property of senior cadres and their children.
- Officially recognize the 4/20 action (i.e., that day's march) as legal and patriotic.
- Establish a Democracy Wall in Drum Tower Square.
- Require people's congresses at all levels to add young student representatives.
- Require the press to announce the 4/20 action and the above demands.
It was not until 10pm that the marching students began to gradually return to their schools.
