After Mao Zedong's death in September of 1976, Hua Guofeng, Wang Dongxing, Ye Jianying and others arrested the Gang of Four on October 6th. The Gang of Four, consisting of Zhang Chunqiao, Wang Hongwen, Yao Wenyuan, and Jiang Qing, were blamed for the Cultural Revolution's excesses; their arrest marked the end of the Cultural Revolution. From November of 1980 to January of 1981, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Committee held a public trial, tying the Lin Biao clique and the Gang of Four together into a single Lin Biao-Jiang Qing Counter-Revolutionary Group. In the end, Jiang Qing and Zhang Chunqiao were sentenced to death, suspended for two years, and stripped of political rights for life; Wang Hongwen was sentenced to life imprisonment, and stripped of political rights for life; and Yao Wenyuan was sentenced to 20 years in prison, stripped of political rights for 5 years.
