On December 23, 1978, literary magazine "Today (Jintian)" was founded in Beijing. The founders included Bei Dao, Mang Ke, Zhang Pengzhi, Sun Junshi, Chen Jiaming, Huang Rui, and Lu Huanxing. At that time, the Xidan Democracy Wall was growing, from big-character posters to gatherings, and gatherings to folk newspapers and periodicals. "Today (Jintian)" was born during this wave. The magazine also symbolized the end of cultural dictatorship in the Gang of Four era.

"Today (Jintian)" published poems, short stories, reviews, and other articles. The magazine also provided translations of foreign literature. In September 1980, the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau suspended publication of the magazine in accordance with the Interim Measures for Periodical Registration; as a result, "Today (Jintian)" was forced to cease publication.
