After the June 4th crackdown, many Beijingers risked their lives to bring the injured to hospitals. Many of those who were brought to hospitals had already died by the time they arrived, or died despite being treated. Hospitals became historic sites; even as they saved lives, workers there were also witnesses to horror. That year, Chief Surgeon Jiang Yanyong of People's Liberation Army Hospital 301 publicly described what it was like trying to save the dying and the wounded. He has written to Chinese Communist Party leadership at least three times, calling on them to redress the injustices of June 4th. Early on, the Tian'anmen Mothers also compiled a "Diagram of Hospitals Where Those Murdered in the Massacre of June 4th Died".
