1989 embroiled the entire country in the democracy movement. As this happened, all the central squares in every major city in China became, for the first and only time since 1949, places where citizens could gather freely. The Xinhua Gate of the Zhongnanhai and various other provincial and city government buildings also became places where students and general citizens expressed their defiance. The place names listed here are primarily from Chinese Communist Party internal materials; many of these places were mentioned as places where unrest happened or where crimes occurred. After the June 4th crackdown, these locations were on strict lockdown, and long remained places where collective civil activity was forbidden. As the powerful know, the calls of the people continue to echo through the skies of history.
