The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China ("the Alliance" or "the HK Alliance") was established May 21st, 1989, during Hong Kong's first million-person-march in order to provide support and backing for patriotic democratic movements in China. After the 1989 student movement, "Release the democracy movement activists; rehabilitate the 1989 democracy movement; determine responsibility for the June 4th massacre; end single-party dictatorship; build a democratic China" became the Alliance's five goals. The Alliance fights for democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law to be realized in China as soon as possible.
Every year, the Alliance selects a new standing committee to be responsible for day-to-day affairs. The standing committee and various departments can also form working groups to handle specific actions, plan events and gatherings, allocate funds to subsidize groups supporting democracy movement activities, etc.
For many years, the Alliance has held the annual June 4th Candlelight Vigil and various other June 4th memorial events, and supported the Tian'anmen Mothers' activities. In addition, the Alliance has long supported work for human rights in China by planning many talks and forums about China-related topics. In the face on unrelenting suppression, the Alliance has stayed committed to implementing all activities in a peaceful, non-violent manner.
