After the events of June 4th, Hong Kong newspapers, including the "Express", the "Oriental Daily News", "Ming Pao", "Hong Kong Times", all reported on the military's forced eviction and crackdown on the demonstrating students. They described how the police fired warning shots to clear the roads; how they burned the Goddess of Democracy statue; and how their armored vehicles were set ablaze.

As the "Express" put it, "Heavy troops continue to arrive. The Square has become a ghost town." The "Oriental Daily News" described it thus: "This morning, Beijing has become a battlefield." "Ming Pao" carried the line: "Chinese Communist Party's Bloody Crackdown on the People". The "Hong Kong Times" said, "PLA Lifts Ban on Killing; Takes Square by Force." Among English media, the South China Sunday Morning Post headline described the Tian'anmen Square scene as a "Beijing Bloodbath". The first edition front page of the Sunday Standard (the Standard's Sunday edition) described the scene of the crackdown as "Military Opens Fire on Public".
